It's Not the End

I'm feeling very nostalgic about this entire Nebraska Learns 2.0. This is the end of the line as far as *things* to do. But it isn't. There is so much more out there. (I think I've said that a lot!)

As I mentioned in my first post, I wasn't looking forward to podcasts at all. Turns out, it was my favorite thing to do! It's something that I will take with me. If it weren't for Nebraska Learns 2.0, I doubt I would have even bothered to try it out. Now look at me, I'm addicted! The lesson on Twitter has also jump started my tweets. It's such a great networking tool...not library related for me, but for my personal blog. I've had so many product requests in the last few weeks due to tweets. That, my friends, is what I'm talking about!

If anything, this whole 2.0 has opened my eyes even more. Don't fall behind the times. Keep up. More importantly, don't let technology scare you...just jump right in! I've enjoyed talking to my co-workers about their experience with Nebraska Learns. The good. The bad. The ugly. Heck, I'm just glad that they are trying it out!

I hope that the Commission will continue with another discovery program in the future. Maybe even a get together at the end of the next one, so we can meet others who have taken part. I look forward to new challenges in the future!

Addicted

This was the one lesson I feared. Scared outta my wits. I did not want anything to do with podcasting. Nope, nada, not me.

Well, thanks to this fine and dandy...I'm now addicted to podcasts. You heard me right. Addicted. Love them! There are SO many great podcasts out there.

First and foremost, I've got to thank my SIL's and MIL for my ipod that I got at Christmas. I love it. It's bright pink and such a dandy. I. Love. It. I've been playing games, downloaded my music. Ahhhh, heaven!

So, back to podcasts. Yesterday I downloaded three. I had to go out and get groceries at Wal*Mart, so what better time to listen? I decided on Boutique Cafe. I read their blog, so thought I'd give it a listen too. The Imprinters, couldn't miss out on the Twilight madness could I? Finally, I subscribed to Words To Mouth. Each week a new book is featured. It's great! I'm so excited for the next edition! I've also added Words to Mouth to my Bloglines account.

I'm hooked.

Thing 21 You Tube

I know Christmas is over, but I can't get this little diddy out of my head. I honestly don't think I will ever hear Toto's Africa the same way again. I think these guys are simply amazing. You Tube is such a great site. I love that there is a little bit of everything. The absolutely gross and disgusting, the informative, the tear-jerkers and of course the funny.

I could see using this in the library. I don't know how well it would go over in our library though. But that's my opinion.

Etsy. Oh yes. I headed right over to the Retail section. I love Etsy. It really is your place to buy or sell all things handmade. I've found some incredible items on Etsy. Like these earrings. How about this dress for Miss Pea? I'm also intrigued by all of the items at Beat Blacks shop.

Not many people would don an Intestines Necklace. It's not your everyday run of the mill necklace. Now, you may be asking yourself. How does one find an intestine necklace? I simply typed in a search..."intestine necklace". Oh no she didn't!

This is the necklace I'm going to get. Except it will have my kiddies names on it. Johnny and Pea. Or should I have Paige?

Anyway...I'm going to browse a bit more on the Web 2.0 Awards site. There's a lot out there! I'll leave you with this....

Messin' with PBwiki~ Thing 18

Now that I've been introduced to PBwiki...be afraid. Be very afraid. I don't mind sharing my thoughts or opinions!

I added to Favorite Blogs, Favorite Movies (Animal House (Isn't it like a classic or something?), Steel Magnolias, and Edward Scissorhands. I was torn because I really like all Johnny Depp movies so I could have listed all of them. But didn't.)and Favorite Books. I didn't add as much as I wanted in favorite books, because frankly, the list could go on and on and on. You get the picture.

I also added to Favorite Websites. Had to give my favorite friends a "shout-out"! I mostly read blogs, and add to my own personal blog. Spreading some linky love...that's what the blog world is all about. I've been seriously blogging for 9 months, and I can not believe all of the incredible opportunities I had. It's not easy, but once you get your name out...especially to those PR reps good things happen.

Another PBwiki I'm really liking is Twitter Wiki. It's oh-so helpful...and hopefully when I get my new phone I'll be tweeting much more!

Wiki-Wiki What? Thing 17

Hours. Yes, hours...could be spent looking at all of the good wiki information found on Thing 17. Wowza! It's a little overwhelming, but I've found a lot of really good, useful information. I've wanted to start a Reading Group or Book Club here at NPPL, but ~~don't~~ didn't know how to go about it. I've got some great ideas now.

Another feature I really liked was the Book Lovers Wiki. It's wonderful! I'm going to have to read Flushed: How the Plumber Saved Civilization. I loved reading the review. It's not too in depth, just enough to make me want to read it. While they are kind of lacking on the Chic Lit and Romance section, they've got a strong Non Fiction that will keep you with something to read.

Another idea that I really like is from the Bull Run Library Wiki. They have an All Fairfax Reads blog and you can write your own reviews. I'd like to hear what others think of books, or even if they have any they'd recommend.

What was the library of the past? A symbol of a society that cared about its attainments, that treasured ideas, that looked ahead multiple generations. Librarians were stewards, trainers, intimate with the knowledge base and the minds who produced it. Librarians today are not just inventory management biobots: they are people with a unique understanding of the documents they compile and catalog, and the relationships among those documents.

I so agree! Libraries are communities! That being said, we grow...and not always at the same pace. I'm a risk-taker. Most of the time, especially when it comes to technology. Others...not so much. There are some people who won't even check their email. To me, I don't know if I could survive not having email! The thought...*gasp* Some ~~are afraid~~ hate change. They simply won't do it. To each their own...but we've got to face it. The times they are a-changing. Step outside of the box. Try something new! It's really hard for me to "do what has always been done". I shake things up...and I think I'm off topic.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I really like the concept of Library 2.0. We strive because of our patrons, whether they come in the door or use the online databases. We've got to change with our patrons. While some are getting older and older, we've got to adapt to those who are starting young. Let's give them all that we can. Start them out on the right foot. The 21st Century is calling...so let's answer.

Because I still can't believe it! I couldn't be happier of the outcome even though it's been a month.

I'll share a link to my Slideshare...it isn't much, but it will get there. There is so much to look at...and I got sidetracked. I think this is a very useful tool. There really is no need to store these Powerpoints on your computer, and libraries can really benefit from having an account.

Can you say Mac Book Pro? How about two Mac Book Pros? Yeah, that's what is up for grabs. I'm in awe. It's easy to enter. Hurry...what are you waiting for?

While I don't know much about Real Lottery Winner, I do like what I see so far. All of the ads have come down...and I think that is great. I'm not a big ads person, although the money that was made from these ads went directly to charity...and that is a good thing. Everything is cut and dry, easy to find.

There is a post about Ebay Charity Auctions. Another that touched my heart. This guy spent all day at a Christmas tree lot buying trees for all who came to get their tree. How awesome is that? Everyone knows how hectic and stressful this time of year can be, but when you have someone do something nice for you...just because...wow. Incredible. Giving back, it feels really good to do it. While I realize that not all of us can buy Christmas trees for everyone, it can be something as simple as paying for the next coffee in line at your favorite coffee shop. That's one of my favorites! Winfield's, anyone?

It's from one of my favorite songs. Of course I had to incorporate it! I went ahead and took the plunge to join delicious. I really thing it's going to work for me, on a personal level. There are so many blogs that I read daily. Through delicious I can tag them and make it easier on myself. That I like!

I think this would benefit the NPPL as well, although I have to wonder if it will be used at all. I think I would use it...and think of it as the "Rolodex" of technology. If that makes any sense. I'll have to try it out and see how it would work. Maybe those of use here at NPPL that are participating in 2.0 can come together and figure out what we need.

Mostly, I tweet to keep up with my Mommy Blogging friends. I, myself, don't add updates to twitter so much because I don't have text messaging yet on my phone. I've got a hubby who is a major tightwad. I'm working on it though. Every girl knows that if you want a goldfish, you ask for a pony. So help me Pete, if anyone tells that to the Hubs...you are going down. I will personally take you out.

Okay, where were we? Anyway, so I tweet every once and a great while, and will after the new year more (new phone under the tree please!). I like reading tweets because I'm a nosy person. Plus, some of the people are just hilarious! Kristen at Mommy4Cocktails cracks me up.

Big surprise, there was nothing for the NPPL. Someday, someday though. I think you could tweet for your library though. Tweet about special presentations, like Brown Bag Luncheons, or special fundraisers. Tweet about when the library will be closing. The possibilities are endless. I'm going to follow Allana, if she okays it. I've tried to add the others, by my computer is acting up. Giving errors and whatnot. So we're just going to let it go at that.

I'm Seeryus, here at Library thing. Want to see what's on my shelf? Click here. It's mostly smut, but I tried to include one or two books that didn't fit into that category. Believe it or not, smut is not the ONLY thing I read. Anywho...

Once again, I'm going to make it a point to play with LibraryThing a bit more. I prefer Facebook's Visual Bookshelf. I like that I can type in a title or author and add without having the page change. Does that make any sense. I want to bing, bang, boom. Not spend all day having to hit the back button. Plus my reader friends on Facebook have their shelf and I can get ideas or we can talk back and forth about certain books. I heart social networks.

Like I said though, I'm going to give LibraryThing a fair shot...because it looks like it could be a social network for those who love books! Be still my heart!

Thing 11 ~ Technology

Technology. There, I've said it. I consider myself young. Ahem, I'm 30. (Ugh!) I'm so afraid of losing touch with the Big T. Every single day there is something new. However, I'm not going to give up. I'm going to learn...and keep learning. I'm going to know just as much as my grandkids when it comes to Technology. That, being some day in the far, far future. It's not going to go away...so we might as well get used to it.

I'm going to add a picture of my little girl Pea. This picture doesn't really fit in with the others I have on my Flickr account. The other pictures are of a trip my mom made this summer to Montana and Canada. She's not good with a computer, so I have to do everything for her. Wanna see the pictures? Click here. I've joined the Pets of Nebraska Librarians group and will have to post a picture of my little Lucy! That, ladies and gentlemen concludes this portion of Thing 8.

Okay, on to Thing 9. I was messing around and has NO IDEA you could watermark pictures! How cool!! This is great for blogging. Obviously, I have my personal blog and I have pictures of my children on there...hopefully they won't hate me in 15 years! With a watermark, I can still put the pictures on my blog, but I guess give myself a sense of security. This would also be helpful for our library blog as well. And for some reason I end up with an error. I'm going to have to play a bit more.

On to Thing 10. I used the Image Generator link and created a Warholizer. I used a different image from the first in this post...I think it's a cute result though!

I've seen others use Wordle. I'd like to, but I don't have the right thing loaded on this computer...so I'm giving up. Not that I usually do that, it's just one of those days.

So, I've signed up for Bloglines. I'd have to say, it's not the most user friendly. Perhaps that's because I use Google Reader. I think Google Reader is much more user friendly. Maybe it's not as "techie" as it should be, but we get along just fine. The one thing I did like about Bloglines, the Top 1000. It was interesting to search through and find the top 1000 blogs, websites, news feeds. Whatever. I've subscribed to some.

Yarn Harlot. I've read her blog for years. This girl...she just cracks me up.

Rocks In My Dryer - Meet Shannon...she's one great lady!

This was a great exercise. I found some really great things that I want to read, now I've just got to find the time! There were so many to choose from, and many more that I'd love to subscribe too. I've got a Technorati account...as do many of my fellow Mommy Bloggers. I like using Technorati, but don't use it much, only to "Fave" a particular blog I like. Companies like to know your rating before they give you products to review and giveaway, but that just depends on the company. This again, is a whole other topic!

How do you like the new digs?? I'll change it a couple of time before 2.0 is through! Change, change is good.

I guess I didn't really introduce myself...so you don't have to call me Seeryus Library or Seeryus Mama, I'm Sky. I'm a (part-time) library lady at the North Platte Public Library. I've got two beautiful kids, Johnny who is 8 and Paige (but I call her Pea) is 13 months. She's the little cutie on the right hand side of the page. My husband and I also have a doggie daughter, a black miniature schnauzer named Lucy. She's got uncropped ears and a white stripe down her back. She's our Skunky-Jack Rabbit.

I've been blogging for a couple of years now, but I've only been blogging seriously since March. I've "met" a lot of really wonderful people. I host giveaways every once and a while...I've got a few in the works now.

Thing 5 has a little something to do with chatting. Here at North Platte Public Library, we don't have a way for you to use Instant Messaging (IM) with patrons. How I wish we did! However, you can always email the Library and someone will answer in a quick manner.

I've been IM'ing for 8 and 1/2 years. I started out with AIM on AOL. Then, when I got my laptop four years ago switched over to Hotmail. We also use Skype on a regular basis. I really like Skype, as we use webcams. I can see and talk to my nephews in California. Usually, they are pretty excited to show me their stash of toys. It's also a way for them to visit with my kids, Johnny and Pea.

Now back to the library biz...In December or April...whatever, the library set up 12 brand spankin' new computers. Don't ask me what kind...I know they are a Dell and have a HUGE screen...but that's it. Anyway, Sara the Computer Guru asked our opinion about installing Meebo. So, we have it. I'm not sure if anyone uses it though. There have been patrons in the past ask, and we've always had chatting blocked. Personally, I'm glad to see it.

So, it's Friday, 4:00 pm....where is everyone? It looks like I'll have to save this post and see where I can get with it next week...until then...It's now Thursday morning and I was able to chat with Michael for a few minutes yesterday. So. Another Thing crossed off my list!

7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners

So I've watched a little diddy on the 7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners. Not only was it to complete Thing 2, but this was good for me on a personal level. There are so many things I want to learn about...technology-wise and personal-wise. My biggest challenge for 2.0 is going to be a podcast. I've never done a podcast and don't listen to them either. It seems like I just don't have the time, plus...I'm not very patient when it comes to listening to something like that. I see it as a book on tape or CD, they don't go fast enough for me, so I'd rather have the book.

Now, I have a Learning Contract. Which totally makes sense. Each year my son brings home a contract at the beginning of the year in school. We have to read over it, talk about it...and we both promise to uphold that contract. It's about giving your all, completing your homework on time, being a good scholar...etc. Now, I have a contract. It's not only going to keep me on task for Nebraska 2.0, but I'm going to fill one out for housework. Why not?
